How do I clear a paper jam without damaging the printer?

Short answer

Turn the printer off, open every access door including the rear one, and pull the paper slowly in the direction it was already travelling, using both hands and even pressure. Never pull it backwards through the rollers. Then check carefully for torn fragments — a scrap left behind is why the next sheet jams too.

Most damage from paper jams is done by the person clearing them rather than by the jam. Paper pulled backwards drags against one-way rollers and can strip them; paper pulled too fast tears and leaves fragments; and a screwdriver used to hook out a piece can score a drum that costs more than the printer. Slow and methodical is genuinely faster here.

Safety

Switch a laser printer off and let it cool before reaching inside. The fuser unit runs hot enough to cause a serious burn and stays hot for several minutes after printing. Never pull paper across the fuser rollers, and never use a metal tool inside any printer. If a piece of paper cannot be reached, stop rather than forcing it — a torn fragment left inside causes repeated jams and can damage the drum.

Step by step

  1. Switch the printer off at the button and let a laser cool.Turning it off stops the rollers moving unexpectedly. On a laser, give it five minutes — the fuser is genuinely hot and is right in the paper path.
  2. Open every door, including the rear one.Most jams are easier to clear from behind, because pulling the sheet out the back means pulling it in the direction it was already going. Many printers also have a removable rear duplex unit that opens the whole path.
  3. Work out which way the sheet was travelling.Look at where the leading edge is and pull that way. Pulling a sheet backwards through the rollers is what strips roller surfaces and leaves the printer jamming permanently afterwards.
  4. Pull slowly, with both hands, evenly.Grip the sheet across as much of its width as you can reach and draw it out steadily. Jerking tears it. If it will not move, look for a release lever — most printers have one that lifts the roller pressure.
  5. Account for the whole sheet.Hold up what you removed and check it is a complete sheet with no missing corner. A torn fragment is the reason a printer jams again immediately, and finding it now is far easier than after another three attempts.
  6. Check the tray and remove the top few sheets.The sheets at the top of the stack may now be creased or misaligned. Remove them, fan the rest, square the stack, and set the guides so they just touch the paper without squeezing it.
  7. Close everything and power up.The printer will usually clear the jam message on its own once it can move the paper path freely. If the message persists with the path clear, a sensor is still blocked — look again with a torch.
  8. Deal with the cause if it recurs.Repeated jams are almost always damp paper, a worn pickup roller, the wrong paper type setting, or a tray guide set too tight or too loose. Deal with the cause rather than getting better at clearing jams.

Common mistakes

  • Pulling the sheet backwards out of the tray — The rollers are designed to turn one way. Dragging paper against them can tear the rubber surface and leaves a printer that will never feed reliably again.
  • Using a screwdriver or scissors to reach a fragment — A scratch on the drum of a laser printer appears as a line on every page from then on, and the drum is a major component. Use blunt plastic tweezers or nothing.
  • Overfilling the paper tray — A tray filled past its marked limit increases pressure on the pickup roller and is a leading cause of multiple-sheet feeds and jams.

If it doesn't work

Jams every few pages

Cause: Damp or curled paper — Fix: Paper absorbs moisture from the air. Store it in its wrapper, flat, somewhere dry — not on a windowsill or in a garage. A fresh ream usually solves it outright.

Pulls several sheets at once

Cause: Static, or a worn separation pad — Fix: Fan the stack before loading. If it persists, the separation pad or roller is worn and both are cheap serviceable parts on most models.

Fails to pick up any paper

Cause: A glazed pickup roller — Fix: Wipe the rubber roller with a barely damp lint-free cloth to remove the glaze of paper dust, and let it dry. This restores grip on most printers and takes two minutes.

Jam message with no paper visible

Cause: A fragment blocking a sensor, or a stuck sensor flag — Fix: Look with a torch along the whole path including under the toner or cartridge carriage. Small triangular flags in the path must move freely.

Paper crumples at the same point each time

Cause: An obstruction or a damaged roller at that point — Fix: Note where in the path it happens and inspect that section closely. A foreign object — a staple, a paperclip, a label backing — is common.

Questions people ask

Is it safe to reach inside a laser printer?

Once it is switched off and has cooled for a few minutes, yes, with care. The fuser is the hot part and it sits in the paper path near the output. Avoid touching the green drum surface with your fingers.

Why does the jam message stay after I have cleared it?

Either a fragment is still in the path or a sensor flag is stuck. Power the printer fully off and on after clearing, and look along the whole path with a torch.

Can label sheets and card cause jams?

Yes, and labels are the worst — a label that peels off inside the printer sticks to a roller and causes repeated jams that are very hard to trace. Only use label stock rated for your printer type.
