How do I get rid of a new furniture or new carpet smell?

New furniture smell is solvent and adhesive off-gassing, and it goes with time and air — which means ventilation and patience rather than any product.

Short answer

Open windows and keep them open. Warmth accelerates the release, so a warm well-ventilated room clears faster than a cold sealed one. Most of it goes in two to four weeks. Bicarbonate of soda and charcoal help a little; scented products only add to the load.

Foam, MDF, adhesives, flame retardants, carpet backing and finishes all release volatile organic compounds as they cure and as residual solvent evaporates. It is called off-gassing, and it is at its highest in the first days and falls away over weeks. The one thing that genuinely speeds it up is exchanging the air.

Safety

The smell from new furniture, foam, carpet and paint is volatile organic compounds, including formaldehyde from some engineered boards and adhesives. They can cause headaches, sore eyes and throat irritation, and the people most affected are babies, pregnant women and anyone with asthma. Ventilate rather than mask, and if a product produces a strong smell that has not faded after several weeks, contact the retailer.

What you'll need

  • Windows that open
  • A fan (optional)
  • Activated charcoal or bicarbonate of soda (optional)

Step by step

  1. Unwrap it and let it breathe as soon as it arrives.Plastic wrapping traps the compounds against the item. Getting it off is the first and most effective thing you can do.
  2. Ventilate properly rather than opening one window. Two openings on different sides of the room gives cross-flow and exchanges the air in minutes rather than hours. A fan blowing outwards helps considerably.
  3. Warm the room rather than cooling it.Off-gassing is temperature-driven. A warm ventilated room releases the compounds faster and gets it over with sooner; a cold sealed room stretches it out for months.
  4. Air new items outside or in a garage if you can.A few days in a dry garage or under cover outdoors gets the worst of it out before the item comes into a bedroom.
  5. Vacuum new carpet daily for the first fortnight.Much of the initial smell and dust is loose fibre and backing residue, and it comes out with vacuuming rather than time.
  6. Put charcoal or bicarbonate nearby.Open trays of activated charcoal absorb a modest amount. It is a supporting measure, not a solution — the air exchange is doing the real work.
  7. Keep it out of a nursery or bedroom initially.Sleeping in an unventilated room with a new mattress or new carpet is the highest-exposure situation. Give it a fortnight of airing first where it matters most.
  8. Give it a month before worrying. Most items are close to unnoticeable within two to four weeks with good ventilation. A strong smell persisting beyond that is worth raising with the retailer.

Tips

  • A new memory foam mattress smells strongest for the first three days. Unwrap it in a ventilated room and let it expand there before making it up.
  • Do not use a scented spray while it off-gasses. You end up with two chemical smells rather than none.
  • The smell of new MDF furniture is largely adhesive. Furniture with a fully sealed or laminated finish releases far less than raw cut edges.

Common mistakes

  • Sealing the room to contain the smell — It concentrates the compounds and extends the process for months. The only thing that removes them is exchanging the air with outside.
  • Masking it with fragrance — Air fresheners add their own volatile compounds, which is more of the same category of thing you are trying to reduce, and it hides whether the problem is actually improving.

If it doesn't work

Headaches or sore eyes in the room

Cause: High VOC concentration and insufficient ventilation — Fix: Ventilate continuously, keep the room out of use for sleeping, and move the item outdoors or to a garage if the symptoms are marked.

Smell still strong after a month

Cause: Poor ventilation, or a genuinely high-emitting product — Fix: Increase air exchange and warmth for a fortnight. If it persists after that, contact the retailer — it is not normal.

Smell worst first thing in the morning

Cause: The room was closed overnight and the compounds accumulated — Fix: Air the room before you sleep and leave a window ajar or a trickle vent open through the night.

Questions people ask

Is the smell actually harmful?

The compounds are irritants at the concentrations involved rather than acutely dangerous, but they cause headaches and eye and throat irritation, and the sensible response is to reduce exposure by ventilating rather than to tolerate it.

Do air purifiers remove it?

Only those with a substantial activated carbon filter, and even then partially. A HEPA filter alone captures particles, not gases. Ventilation outperforms any purifier for this.

How long does new carpet smell last?

Usually one to three weeks with daily ventilation and vacuuming. Carpet fitted with a solvent-based adhesive rather than gripper rods can take longer.
