What is the difference between bio and non-bio detergent?
Biological detergent contains enzymes that digest protein, starch and fat; non-bio does not. That single difference decides which stains come out and which fabrics survive.

Short answer
Bio removes food, blood, sweat and grass far better and works at lower temperatures. Non-bio is for wool, silk and genuinely sensitive skin. Bio enzymes stop working above about forty degrees, so a hot wash wastes the thing you paid for.
The bio and non-bio labels describe one thing only: whether enzymes have been added. Everything else in the bottle — surfactants, builders, brighteners — is broadly the same. Choosing between them is therefore a question about what you are washing rather than about quality.

Step by step
- Understand what the enzymes actually do.Protease digests protein, amylase digests starch, lipase digests fats and cellulase lifts the fibre ends that make cotton look dull. Each targets a class of soil that surfactants alone struggle with.
- Use bio for everyday household washing.Food, sweat, grass, blood, baby stains, cooking marks. It is meaningfully better at all of them, and it lets you wash cooler for the same result.
- Use non-bio for wool and silk.Both are protein fibres. Protease cannot distinguish between a stain made of protein and a fibre made of protein, and it will damage the garment over repeated washes.
- Keep bio below forty degrees.Enzymes are proteins themselves and denature with heat. Above about forty they stop working, so a sixty degree wash with bio detergent is paying for something you have just destroyed.
- Let it dwell for stains.Enzymes need time. A short cycle gives them almost none. Pre-treating a stain with a little liquid bio detergent for fifteen minutes does more than any temperature increase.
- Choose non-bio only if skin is genuinely affected.Most reactions attributed to bio detergent are actually to fragrance, to fabric conditioner, or to detergent residue from overdosing. A non-bio with fragrance may be no better.
- Rinse properly whichever you use.Residue is the main irritant. An extra rinse and the correct dose matter more for sensitive skin than the bio and non-bio choice does.
- Check the dose for your water hardness.Hard water needs more detergent because minerals consume part of it. Underdosing in a hard water area is why washing looks grey regardless of which type you buy.
Tips
- Liquid bio detergent used neat as a stain pre-treatment is one of the cheapest and most effective stain removers there is.
- If someone in the house reacts to washing, drop fabric conditioner first and add a rinse. That solves it far more often than switching to non-bio.
- Powder generally outperforms liquid on whites because it usually contains oxygen bleach; liquid outperforms powder on greasy marks and colours.
Common mistakes
- Using bio detergent on wool or silk — The protease enzyme digests the protein the fibre is made of. Damage is gradual — thinning, loss of loft and eventually holes — so it is often blamed on the garment rather than the detergent.
- Running bio detergent at sixty degrees for stubborn stains — The heat denatures the enzymes before they can act. You get the performance of a plain detergent at higher cost and higher energy use.
If it doesn't work
Food stains not coming out at thirty degrees
Cause: Non-bio detergent, or too short a cycle for the enzymes — Fix: Switch to bio and use a longer programme, or pre-treat the stain with neat liquid bio for fifteen minutes.
Skin irritation after washing
Cause: Residue, fragrance or fabric conditioner rather than the enzyme — Fix: Correct the dose, add an extra rinse and stop using fabric conditioner. Change detergent type only if that does not resolve it.
Woollens thinning or developing holes
Cause: Enzyme damage from bio detergent — Fix: Switch to a wool-specific or non-bio detergent. Existing damage cannot be reversed.
Washing looks grey despite a full dose
Cause: Hard water consuming detergent, or an overloaded drum — Fix: Dose for hard water, reduce the load size, and run an occasional wash with a water softener additive.

Is bio detergent bad for sensitive skin?
The evidence for enzymes specifically causing irritation in normal use is weak. Residue, fragrance and fabric conditioner are the more common culprits, and dosing correctly with an extra rinse resolves most cases.
Which is better for baby clothes?
Bio handles milk, food and nappy stains far better, which is most of what baby clothes have on them. Use a fragrance-free version, dose correctly and rinse well.
Can I mix bio and non-bio?
There is no harm in it, but there is no benefit either. Use whichever suits the load you are actually putting in.
