Should I buy a heat pump, condenser or vented tumble dryer?

Heat pump dryers cost more and run at about a third of the electricity, but they dry more slowly and cooler — which is better for clothes and worse for impatience.

All three types tumble clothes in warm air. The difference is what they do with the moist air afterwards. A vented dryer blows it outside, a condenser cools it and collects the water in a tank, and a heat pump recovers the heat from that air and reuses it, which is why it uses so much less electricity.

  1. Check what your space allows first.A vented dryer needs a permanent route outside or a window it can hose to. If you do not have that, the choice is between condenser and heat pump.
  2. Compare running cost honestly.A heat pump dryer uses roughly a third of the electricity of a vented or condenser machine per load. Multiply by how many loads you actually dry in a year.
  3. Weigh the purchase price against that.Heat pump machines cost substantially more to buy. Two or three loads a week generally pays the difference back within a few years; one load a month does not.
  4. Accept the slower cycle.Heat pump dryers run cooler and take longer, often half as long again. That is the mechanism working, not a fault.
  5. Value the lower temperature.Because the air is cooler, heat pump drying is measurably gentler on elastane, coatings and knitwear. It is the strongest non-financial argument for one.
  6. Consider the energy label.Vented and condenser machines rarely rate better than C. Heat pump machines routinely reach A or better. On a dryer the label difference is real rather than marginal.
  7. Check the maintenance each type needs.All need the lint filter cleaned every load. Condensers need the condenser unit rinsed. Heat pumps have an additional filter behind the plinth that must be cleaned or they slow down badly.
  8. Think about where the heat and moisture go.A vented dryer removes both from the room. A condenser or heat pump releases warmth into the room, which is welcome in winter and unpleasant in a small kitchen in August.
  9. Consider whether you need one at all.A dehumidifier with an indoor airer costs far less to buy and run, and dries a load overnight without any heat damage. It is genuinely the better answer for some households.

  • Washer-dryers dry a smaller load than they wash, so a full wash has to be split into two dries. Consider that before choosing one to save space.
  • Whatever type you buy, a higher spin speed on the washing machine is the cheapest way to reduce drying cost.
  • Check the noise rating if the machine will live in a kitchen next to a living space. Heat pump machines are usually quieter.

  • Buying on purchase price alone — A tumble dryer is one of the highest-consumption appliances in a house. A cheaper vented or condenser machine used several times a week can cost more in electricity within a few years than the price difference.
  • Never cleaning the heat pump's secondary filter — It clogs with fine lint, airflow drops, and cycles get progressively longer until the machine appears broken. It is behind a panel at the bottom and most owners do not know it exists.

Clothes damaged or shrinking

Cause: A vented or condenser machine running hot on a high setting — Fix: Use low heat and sensor drying. If it happens repeatedly, the gentler heat pump type is the answer.

Water tank filling every load and needing emptying

Cause: Normal for condenser and heat pump machines — Fix: Many can be plumbed to the waste pipe with a drain kit, which removes the chore entirely.

Is a heat pump dryer worth it for a small household?

If you dry two or more loads a week, generally yes on running cost alone. For occasional use the payback stretches out and a cheaper machine makes more sense.

Do heat pump dryers dry clothes properly?

Yes, they just take longer because the air is cooler. Clothes come out fully dry and noticeably less creased and less damaged than from a hot vented machine.

What about a washer-dryer instead?

It saves space and nothing else. Drying capacity is typically half the wash capacity, cycles are long, and a fault takes out both functions at once.
