Should my heated towel rail be plumbed, electric or dual fuel?

Short answer

A plumbed rail is cheapest to run and gives nothing when the heating is off, which is most of the year. An electric rail works whenever you want it and costs electricity rates to run. Dual fuel gives you both: the heating circuit in winter and an electric element in summer. For most UK homes, dual fuel is the right answer if the plumbing is already there.

A towel rail has two jobs that people conflate: heating the room, and drying towels. It heats the room only as well as its output allows, which on a slim ladder rail is often not very much. It dries towels whenever it is hot — and that is where the fuel question bites, because a plumbed rail is cold from spring to autumn, which is exactly when a bathroom stays damp and towels do not dry.

Any electric element in a bathroom is electrical work in a defined zone, and it is notifiable. A towel rail element must be the correct IP rating for its zone and must be connected by a competent person — a switched fused spur outside the bathroom, or a suitable connection point, not a plug into a socket. Do not connect an electric element yourself and do not fit a plug to one.

  1. Understand the plumbed rail.It is a radiator on the central heating circuit, with valves at the bottom like any other. It is hot when the heating is on and stone cold when it is not. It is the cheapest to run because it uses whatever the boiler is producing anyway, and it needs no electrical work at all.
  2. Understand the electric rail.A sealed rail containing a heating element and a fluid, connected to a fused spur. It works entirely independently of the heating, at any time of year, and can be put on a timer or a thermostat. It costs electricity rates to run, which are considerably higher per unit than gas, so it is not the one to leave on all day.
  3. Understand dual fuel.A plumbed rail with an electric element fitted into the bottom of one side, and a special valve arrangement so the rail can be isolated from the heating circuit and run on the element alone. Central heating in winter, electric in summer. It is the arrangement that matches how people actually use a bathroom.
  4. Ask whether the plumbing already exists.If there is a radiator or a towel rail on the heating circuit in that bathroom already, plumbed or dual fuel is straightforward. If there is nothing, running new heating pipework into a bathroom is a much bigger job than fitting a spur, and an electric rail becomes far more attractive.
  5. Be realistic about the heat output.A slim chrome ladder rail puts out surprisingly little heat, because chrome is a poor emitter and the surface area is small. If the rail is the room's only heat source, check its stated output against what the room needs — do not assume a towel rail heats a bathroom. A painted or anthracite rail emits noticeably more than the same rail in chrome.
  6. Think about running cost honestly.Electricity costs several times more per unit than gas. An electric rail used for an hour a day to dry towels is a small cost; the same rail left on continuously is not. This is a controllability question as much as a fuel one, and a timer or thermostat is what makes electric affordable.
  7. Do not fit the electric element yourself.Bathrooms are divided into zones based on distance from the bath and shower, and the zone dictates what IP rating a fitting must have and where the connection may be. An electric towel rail element is connected via a suitable fused connection, usually outside the bathroom or by a pull-cord, by a competent person. This is not a job to improvise.
  8. Get the valve arrangement right on dual fuel.A dual fuel rail needs the element in one bottom connection and specific valves so that the rail can be filled, isolated from the circuit and run electrically without the pressure and expansion being a problem. Have the plumbing done by someone who has fitted one before — the wrong valve arrangement is the usual reason a dual fuel rail does not work properly on electric.
  9. Use it as a drying rail, not a room heater.Whatever the fuel, hang towels spread out rather than folded double, and do not cover the whole rail. A rail draped with everything in the bathroom emits far less heat and dries nothing properly.

Alternatives

  • Radiator plus a separate towel rail: Where the bathroom genuinely needs heating, a properly sized radiator with a small towel rail alongside works far better than trying to heat the room with a ladder rail.
  • Underfloor heating with a towel rail: Electric underfloor mat heats the room comfortably and evenly; the towel rail then only has to dry towels. Common in bathroom refurbishments and it is installation work.
  • Just drying towels elsewhere: A towel dried in a warmer, drier room dries faster than one on a cold rail, and it removes moisture from the bathroom, which helps the mould problem too.

Can I put a plug on an electric towel rail?

Is a chrome rail worse than a painted one?
