Which caulking gun should I buy, and how do I stop it oozing?
Thrust ratio, rod type and the anti-drip mechanism are the three things that decide whether a gun is pleasant or infuriating — and none of them is on the front of the pack.

Short answer
Get a gun with a high thrust ratio, a smooth rod rather than a notched one, and a proper release lever. Those three cost very little more than the cheapest gun and they transform the control you have over the bead. For heavy use, a battery gun with variable speed and automatic anti-drip retraction is a genuine upgrade rather than a gadget.
The cheapest caulking gun in the shop is a false economy that shows up as an uneven bead. Almost every complaint about sealant being hard to apply — pulsing, blobbing, unstoppable oozing, a trigger that needs both hands on a cold day — is a property of the gun rather than the sealant, and the differences between guns are real and easy to check.
Step by step
- Look at the thrust ratio first.It is the ratio between the force at the trigger and the force delivered to the cartridge. A higher ratio means less hand effort for the same flow, and it also means finer control at low flow rates. A low-ratio gun with a cold, stiff cartridge is genuinely hard to squeeze and impossible to modulate.
- Choose a smooth rod over a notched one.A notched or ladder rod advances in discrete clicks, which pulses the bead. A smooth rod driven by a friction pawl advances continuously and gives a steadier flow. This is visible in the finished bead.
- Check there is a proper release lever.A thumb lever at the back that releases the pawl instantly. Flicking it a moment before the end of a run releases the pressure so the bead stops when you do. Guns without one ooze until the pressure equalises, which is where the blob at the end of every run comes from.
- Decide between skeleton, cradle and battery.Skeleton frames are cheapest and lightest and you can see how much is left. Closed cradles take foil sausage packs and are much easier to keep clean. Battery guns give perfectly constant flow, variable speed and automatic retraction, and they are the answer for anyone doing more than the occasional joint.
- Check the built-in nozzle cutter and seal spike.Most handles have a blade to cut the nozzle and a folding spike to pierce the foil seal under the thread. Both save reaching for a knife, and the spike in particular prevents the classic first-time confusion of squeezing hard and nothing coming out.
- Use the release lever before you stop moving.This is the technique half of the oozing question. Flick the release a fraction of a second before the end of the run, keep moving, and the bead tapers off rather than ending in a lump.
- Store part-used cartridges nozzle-up with the nozzle plugged.A tapered plug or a proper cap. Standing them upright means any residual pressure pushes air rather than sealant, and the contents do not settle into the nozzle and set.
- Clean the gun after use.Wipe the plunger disc, the frame and especially the nose. Cured sealant on the plunger disc makes it bind, and a gun that binds gives a pulsing bead however good it is.
Tips
- A cold cartridge is the commonest reason a gun feels impossible. Bring the cartridge indoors overnight before blaming the tool.
- Sausage packs need a cradle or sausage gun and are far better value on any large job, as well as producing much less waste.
- Battery guns are heavy at the front. On overhead work that matters, and a lighter skeleton gun with a high thrust ratio may actually be easier.
- If a gun is dripping continuously even after the release, the plunger disc may be bent or the cartridge damaged. Check the disc sits square.
- Keep the spare cartridge in a pocket in cold weather. Warm sealant tools far better than cold and the difference in finish is obvious.
If it doesn't work
The bead pulses rather than flowing evenly
Cause: A notched rod advancing in clicks, or a binding plunger — Fix: Use a smooth-rod or battery gun for anything visible, and clean cured sealant off the plunger disc and frame.
It keeps extruding after I stop squeezing
Cause: Residual pressure in the cartridge — normal behaviour — Fix: Flick the release lever a moment before the end of the run. If the gun has no release lever, it is the wrong gun for neat work.
Nothing comes out however hard I squeeze
Cause: The foil seal under the nozzle thread has not been pierced — Fix: Unscrew the nozzle and puncture the seal with the spike on the gun handle or a long screwdriver.
The trigger is too stiff to control
Cause: Low thrust ratio, a cold cartridge, or a stiff product — Fix: Warm the cartridge, and for future work buy a higher thrust ratio gun. It is the single biggest difference in ease of use.

What thrust ratio do I need?
Higher is better for both effort and control, and the difference between a budget gun and a good one is substantial. Any gun that quotes its ratio at all is usually a better tool than one that does not.
Are battery caulking guns worth it?
For occasional use, no. For anyone sealing regularly, yes — constant flow, variable speed and automatic anti-drip retraction genuinely improve the result and remove hand fatigue.
How do I stop the sealant coming out after I let go?
