How do I choose a blender, and what does the wattage really tell you?
Wattage is the most quoted and least useful blender specification. What actually determines whether it makes a smooth soup — jug shape, blade geometry and speed — and which type to buy.

Short answer
Wattage tells you what the motor draws, not what the blades do. Jug shape, blade design and tip speed decide smoothness, which is why a well-designed 800W jug blender beats a badly designed 1,500W one. Decide the type first: a stick blender for soups in the pan, a jug blender for smoothies and volume, a high-power blender only if you want nut butters and truly smooth green smoothies.
Blender marketing runs on watts because it is a single number that goes up. It is a measure of electrical input, and what matters to the food is how fast the blade tips move and whether the jug keeps returning the contents to them. A tall narrow jug that creates a vortex will out-blend a wide one with a bigger motor almost every time.

- Choose the type before the specification.Stick blender: soups and sauces in the pan, cheapest, easiest to wash, no jug to store. Jug blender: smoothies, batters, volume, and anything you want genuinely smooth. High-power blender: nut butters, frozen fruit, whole leaves, at a considerable price. Personal blender: single-serve smoothies, blends into the bottle you drink from.
- Understand why wattage is a weak signal.It is the motor's electrical draw. What the food experiences is blade tip speed and how effectively the jug circulates the contents back through the blades. Jug geometry, blade angle and speed under load all matter more, and none of them appears on the box.
- Look at the jug's shape and its capacity honestly.A tall, narrow jug with a slight taper draws the contents down into the blades and creates a vortex. A wide squat jug lets ingredients ride up the sides. Working capacity for liquids is also well below the stated capacity, because it foams and climbs — expect to use about two thirds.
- Look at the blade assembly.Multiple blades at different heights and angles work the whole depth of the jug rather than only the bottom. Blunt-edged blades are normal on high-power machines — they pulverise by speed rather than cutting, and they do not need sharpening.
- Check what happens when it meets something hard.The useful specification is behaviour under load: whether the motor bogs down, whether it has a thermal cut-out that trips easily, and whether there is a tamper for pushing thick mixtures down. A machine that stalls on frozen fruit is not saved by its wattage figure.
- Check whether it takes hot liquids.Blending hot soup in a sealed jug builds pressure and can blow the lid off. A jug rated for hot liquids has a vented lid or a removable cap. If it is not rated, blend in batches, well below full, with the cap out and a cloth over the hole — or use a stick blender in the pan instead.
- Judge how easy it is to clean, because that decides use.A jug that separates from its blade assembly is easier to clean thoroughly but has a seal that can leak and needs replacing. A sealed jug is cleaned by blending warm water and a drop of washing-up liquid. Either is fine; a jug you dread washing is not.
- Decide whether a high-power machine is genuinely for you.They are meaningfully better at nut butters, whole nuts, frozen fruit, kale and truly smooth results, and they are loud and expensive. If your use is soup and banana smoothies, a good mid-range jug blender or a stick blender does the same job.
Tips
- For soup, a stick blender in the pan beats a jug blender on every axis except final smoothness — no transferring hot liquid, far less washing up, and no pressure risk.
- Add liquid first and solids after. It gets the vortex started and stops the blades stalling against a packed jug.
- A tamper is the accessory that makes thick mixtures possible. If a machine needs one, check it is included and that the lid is designed for it.
- Personal blenders that blend into the drinking bottle are excellent for a single smoothie and poor at everything else. Buy one knowing that.

- Comparing blenders on watts — It measures the motor's electrical draw, not what happens to the food. Jug geometry and blade speed under load decide the result and neither is on the box.
- Blending hot liquid in a sealed jug — Steam expands and blows the lid off, throwing scalding liquid. Only blend hot in a jug rated for it, below the stated hot fill line, with the vent cap out.
- Filling to the stated capacity — Liquids climb and foam. Working capacity is roughly two thirds of the number on the jug, and exceeding it makes a mess rather than a smoother result.

- Stick or immersion blender: Blends in the pan or jug. Cheapest, smallest, easiest to wash, and the best tool for soup. Will not make a truly smooth smoothie.
- Mid-range jug blender: The general-purpose choice. Smoothies, batters, sauces and volume. Look at jug shape and blade layout rather than the wattage figure.
- High-power blender: Nut butters, whole nuts, frozen fruit, leaves, genuinely smooth results. Expensive and very loud, and unnecessary for most households.
- Personal or bottle blender: Blends a single serving into the container you drink from. Excellent for that one job and poor at everything else.
Questions people ask
Will a 1000W blender crush ice?
Maybe. Ice crushing depends on blade design, jug shape and the machine's ability to hold speed under load rather than on rated power. Check whether the manufacturer states ice crushing explicitly, because plenty of high-wattage blenders do not.
Do I need a blender and a food processor?
They are genuinely different tools: a blender has a tall narrow jug for liquids, a processor has a wide flat bowl for solids. If you only want one, decide by whether your cooking involves more liquid or more chopping.
Why does my blender smell hot?
Usually an overloaded motor with too little liquid, or a jammed blade. Stop, let it cool, add liquid and work in smaller batches. A hot smell with the machine running freely and unloaded is a different and more serious symptom.
