How do I check a frame or a room is square?

Measuring the diagonals, the 3-4-5 method for corners with no opposite side, and how to pull a frame back into square before the glue sets.

Short answer

Measure both diagonals of a rectangle. If they are equal, it is square; if not, the frame is a parallelogram and needs pulling along the longer diagonal. For a single corner with no opposite side, use 3-4-5: three units along one side, four along the other, and the hypotenuse must be five.

A square carries only as far as its blade, which is fine for a joint and useless for a door frame or a room. The diagonal check works at any size and needs nothing but a tape.

Step by step

  1. Confirm the opposite sides are equal first.The diagonal test only proves squareness in a shape whose opposite sides already match. Check length against length and width against width before anything else.
  2. Measure corner to corner both ways.Hook the tape into one corner and read to the diagonally opposite one, then repeat for the other pair. Measure to the same point on each corner every time.
  3. Compare the two figures.Equal means square. A difference means the frame leans towards the shorter diagonal.
  4. Pull the longer diagonal in.A sash clamp or a ratchet strap across the long diagonal, tightened gently while you remeasure. Half the difference is what each diagonal will move.
  5. Brace it once it is square.A temporary diagonal batten screwed across the frame holds it while glue cures or while it is fixed in place.
  6. Use 3-4-5 where there is no opposite side.For setting out a corner on the ground or against a wall, mark 300mm along one line and 400mm along the other; the distance between those marks must be 500mm. Any multiple of 3, 4 and 5 works, and bigger is more accurate.
  7. Scale the triangle up for accuracy.600, 800 and 1000 is far more precise than 300, 400 and 500, because the same measuring error represents a smaller angular error.
  8. Remember rooms are rarely square.For fitting purposes, measure and scribe to what is actually there. Knowing a room is out of square by 15mm tells you where to hide the discrepancy.
  9. Check for wind as well as square.A frame can have equal diagonals and still be twisted out of plane. Sight across two winding sticks or a pair of straight battens laid on opposite ends.

Tips

  • Equal diagonals only prove square if opposite sides are already equal. Check both.
  • Bigger triangles give better accuracy in 3-4-5 — use 600, 800 and 1000 rather than the small version.
  • Brace with a diagonal batten as soon as a frame is square. Glue-ups drift as they are moved.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a room or an opening is square — Almost none are. Fitting a square unit into an out-of-square opening leaves a tapering gap that gets blamed on the unit.
  • Measuring diagonals from slightly different points — Hooking the tape on an arris one time and a face the next introduces an error the same size as the one you are checking for.

If it doesn't work

Diagonals differ by several millimetres in a glued frame

Cause: Frame racked during clamping — Fix: Before the glue sets, apply a clamp across the longer diagonal and pull it in, checking as you go. After the glue has cured, this is not recoverable.

Frame square but does not sit flat

Cause: Twist, or wind, in the frame — Fix: Clamp it down flat on a known flat surface while the glue cures, or shim one corner and re-clamp.

Unit fitted square but gaps at the wall

Cause: The opening is out of square — Fix: Scribe the unit or a filler strip to the wall rather than trying to force the unit out of square.

3-4-5 comes out wrong every time

Cause: Measuring from an inconsistent origin — Fix: Mark the corner point clearly and measure both legs from the exact same point.

Questions people ask

How accurate does a frame need to be?

For a door or a drawer, within a millimetre over the diagonal or it will show. For a shed or a decking frame, a few millimetres is fine.

Does this work for a room?

Yes, and it is the standard way to check one before tiling or laying flooring. It also tells you where to start the first row so the discrepancy lands somewhere inconspicuous.

What if I cannot reach across the diagonal?

Use a string line and a pencil mark on it, or measure in two parts against a straightedge. A laser measure makes it trivial.
