Why has my carpet gone flat in the traffic lanes?
Flattened pile in the walking routes is either crushing, which recovers, or wear, which does not. How to tell them apart in a minute, and what actually lifts a crushed pile.

Short answer
Look closely at the pile tips. If the tufts are still full but lying over, it is crushing and it can be lifted with moisture, heat and grooming. If the tips are frayed, splayed and thinning so backing shows, that is wear and the fibre is gone — no treatment brings it back.
The two look identical from standing height and they are completely different problems. Crushing is the pile bent over by repeated footfall; the fibre is intact and it can be persuaded back up. Wear is the fibre abraded away; there is nothing left to lift. Get on your knees and look before spending money on either.
Step by step
- Get down and look at individual tufts. In good light, part the pile with your fingers in the worn lane and in an untouched area such as under a sofa. Compare tuft height and tip condition. This takes a minute and settles the diagnosis.
- Test whether it lifts.Dampen a small patch lightly, warm it with a hairdryer on low, and groom the pile up with a stiff brush or a carpet rake. If it stands up, you have crushing. If it flops straight back down with the tufts still splayed, you have wear.
- For crushing, treat the whole lane.A light misting of water, gentle heat and thorough grooming. Steam from a domestic steam cleaner held above the pile rather than pressed into it works on wool, which recovers well. Let it dry fully before walking on it.
- Vacuum properly and often.Grit at the base of the pile cuts the fibres as feet flex them, so a lane that is vacuumed poorly wears faster as well as looking flatter. A beater bar on cut pile lifts and separates the fibre; on loop pile use suction only.
- Change the traffic pattern if you can.Move a piece of furniture, put a runner on the main route, or add a doormat at the door. A lane that is walked twenty times a day cannot be maintained out of existence.
- Deal with the grit at the door.Barrier matting at every external door is the highest-value thing you can do for a carpet's life. Most of the abrasion in a traffic lane is grit walked in from outside.
- For wear, accept the diagnosis.Worn fibre cannot be restored. The options are a rug or runner over the lane, professional patching from a spare piece if you have one, or replacement. Carpet cleaners who promise to restore a worn lane are promising something the fibre cannot do.
- Specify better next time.Traffic lane wear in two or three years usually means an under-specified carpet for the room. Density, fibre and wear rating are the three things to buy on for a hall or a landing.
Questions people ask
Will professional cleaning bring the pile back up?
It genuinely helps with crushing, because hot water extraction lifts and separates the fibres. It does nothing for wear, and a good cleaner will tell you which one you have before taking the money.
Why is the lane a different colour as well as flatter?
Flattened pile reflects light differently, so a crushed lane often looks darker or lighter from one direction and normal from the other. If the shading reverses as you walk round the room, it is pile direction rather than dirt.
Is pile reversal the same thing?
No. Pile reversal, or shading, is a permanent change in the direction the fibres lie, producing irregular light and dark patches. It is not a fault and not caused by wear, and there is no cure for it.
