Short answer
Manufacturer-refurbished with a warranty is usually excellent value and carries very little risk. "Refurbished" from an unknown seller with no warranty is just used, and should be priced as such.
The word covers everything from a factory-restored unit with a full warranty to something someone wiped and put in a box. The warranty is what distinguishes them, and it is the thing to look at first.

- Check who refurbished it.Manufacturer or an authorised partner: tested, repaired with genuine parts, warranted. A large retailer: usually reliable, warranty varies. An unknown marketplace seller: effectively used, whatever the listing says.
- Look for the warranty length.The most informative single fact. A year or more suggests genuine confidence. Thirty days or none tells you what the seller thinks.
- Check the grading, and that grading is explained.Most sellers grade cosmetic condition. A well-run seller explains what each grade means. Cosmetic grades do not describe function, which the warranty covers.
- Check the battery position for portable devices.The most likely worn component. Ask whether it has been replaced or what health it is at. A refurbished laptop with an original worn battery is a partial product.
- Confirm how long it will get software updates.A refurbished device several generations old may be close to the end of security support. That is the real expiry date and it matters more than condition.
- Check what is included.Charger, cables, original packaging. Refurbished units often come with generic accessories, which is usually fine but worth knowing.
- Check your rights.Buying from a business gives you consumer rights, adjusted for the item being refurbished. Buying from a private seller gives you almost none.
- Compare against a new entry-level model.A refurbished mid-range machine usually beats a new budget one at the same price, and this is where refurbished is most clearly worth it.
