Can I fit a pump to boost my mains water pressure?
Why boosting straight off the main is not allowed, and the three lawful ways to get more out of a poor incoming supply.

Short answer
You cannot lawfully fit a booster pump directly on the incoming main beyond a very small permitted rate — it robs your neighbours and risks backflow. The lawful options are an accumulator, a break tank with a pump, or upgrading the buried supply pipe. Which one suits depends on whether your problem is pressure or flow.

Everyone with a disappointing shower eventually asks this, and the honest answer has two parts. The regulatory part is that pumping the main is not yours to do — the water in that pipe is a shared resource and the rules exist because one house with a pump measurably degrades the street. The practical part is more useful: pumping cannot create water that is not arriving, so even where it is allowed it only helps a specific kind of problem.

- Establish whether you actually have a flow problem.Measure the flow rate at the kitchen cold tap. If it is genuinely low, no pump on the main can fix it — the pipe cannot deliver more water however hard you pull. If the flow is decent and only the pressure feels weak, the picture is different.
- Understand what the regulations say.Boosting directly from a supply pipe is only permitted up to a very small flow rate, and beyond that the water company's written consent is required — which in practice means it is not done. Anything larger must draw from a break tank or an accumulator, which isolates your demand from the network.
- Consider an accumulator first.A vessel that stores mains water under pressure and releases it during short peaks. It does not increase your average flow, but it covers the ten minutes when two showers run. It suits houses with reasonable average flow and a peak-demand problem, and it needs a cupboard or loft space for a substantial vessel.
- Consider a break tank and pump.Mains fills a storage tank at whatever rate it can manage; a pump then draws from that tank and supplies the house at whatever pressure and flow you want. This is the answer where the incoming flow is genuinely poor, because it decouples supply rate from demand rate. It needs space, a properly protected tank and a pump that will be audible.
- Consider upgrading the supply pipe.Often the real fix. Many older houses have an undersized or scaled buried supply, and replacing it — usually by mole or trench from the boundary to the house — transforms both pressure and flow. Cost depends entirely on the run and what is on top of it.
- Ask the water company to test at the boundary.They will measure pressure and flow where their responsibility ends, usually free. If those figures are below the level they are required to supply, that is their problem to remedy. If they are fine, you now know the fault is in your own supply pipe and can spend accordingly.
- Rule out the cheap causes before spending anything.Part-closed stopcock, part-closed isolating valve, scaled aerators, a blocked strainer on an unvented control group. Every one of them mimics low supply and every one costs nothing to check.
Tips
- The regulations are enforced by the water company, and they do act on reports. A pump fitted by a previous owner can become your problem at sale.
- Ask any installer proposing a booster which regulation permits it and whether a break tank is included. A straight answer is a good sign.
- Pumps are noisy in a way that specifications do not convey. Site one where you will not hear it at six in the morning.
- If the house is on a shared supply with neighbours, a pump is even more clearly not an option — you are pulling directly from their water.
Alternatives
- Accumulator: Stores mains water under pressure in a diaphragm vessel and gives it back during peak draw. No electricity, nothing to service beyond a periodic vessel check, silent. Only helps peak demand, not a genuinely poor average flow, and takes up real space.
- Break tank and booster set: A stored tank refilled at whatever rate the main allows, with a pump supplying the house from it. Works with almost any incoming supply and gives complete control of pressure and flow. Needs space, power, a properly protected tank and produces audible pump noise.
- New supply pipe: Replacing the buried pipe from the boundary with modern larger-bore plastic. Fixes the cause rather than compensating for it, adds no equipment to maintain, and often the best value where the existing pipe is old lead or narrow steel. Disruptive to drives and gardens.
- Tank-fed pump (vented systems only): Where the house is already gravity-fed from a loft tank, a twin-impeller pump on the hot and cold tank feeds is entirely permitted and very effective, because it draws from stored water rather than the main.

Enforcement is complaint-driven and inconsistent, which is not the same as it being permitted. It remains a breach, it can be required to be removed, and it will be picked up on any competent survey.
What about the small pumps sold as shower boosters?
Those are designed for tank-fed systems and are entirely lawful there. Fitted to a mains-fed system they are both non-compliant and largely ineffective, because there is no stored water for them to draw on.
How do I know whether an accumulator will help me?
Measure the flow. A good average flow with a peak problem is the accumulator case. A poor average flow at all times is the break tank or new supply pipe case.
