How do I fix a solid wood table top down so it can still move?

Four standard fixings that hold a top firmly down while letting it change width — and the rigid screw through a rail that splits table tops every winter.

Short answer

Never screw a solid top rigidly to a frame across its width. Use buttons in a groove, figure-of-eight plates, Z-clips, or screws through slotted holes in the rails, with the slots running across the width of the top. Fix the centre of the top solidly so movement is shared evenly to both edges, and let everything outward of that slide.

This is the single most common reason a home-made table splits. A solid top a metre wide can change several millimetres in width between August and February. A row of screws driven straight through the frame rails into the underside of the top holds it at a fixed width, and when the wood tries to shrink, the wood loses. The fix is trivially cheap and takes ten minutes.

Step by step

  1. Work out which direction the top will move.Across the grain of the boards. Rails running parallel to the grain do not restrain it; rails running across the grain do, and those are the ones that need slotted or sliding fixings.
  2. Fix the middle of the top solidly and let the edges move.One or two fixings in the centre of the top's width can be rigid. Everything outward of that must be free to slide. This keeps the top centred on the base instead of creeping sideways over years.
  3. Method one — buttons in a groove.Cut a groove around the inside of the rails. Make small hardwood buttons with a tongue that sits in the groove and a screw through into the top. The tongue slides along the groove as the top moves. Traditional, cheap to make, and completely reliable.
  4. Method two — figure-of-eight plates.A steel plate shaped like a figure eight, recessed into the top edge of the rail with a Forstner bit. One hole screws to the rail, the other to the top, and the plate pivots slightly as the top moves. Easiest method with a drill only.
  5. Method three — Z-clips in a saw kerf.A stepped steel clip that hooks into a narrow kerf cut round the inside of the rails and screws up into the top. Quick if you have a biscuit joiner or a saw to cut the kerf.
  6. Method four — slotted holes in the rails.Drill an oversize hole or rout a short slot through the rail, running across the width of the top. Screw through with a washer and do not fully tighten — the screw needs to be able to slide in the slot.
  7. Space the fixings sensibly.Every 250 to 400 mm around the frame is normal. Too few and the top can lift or twist; too many is only extra work.
  8. Do not glue the top to the frame anywhere.Not even a spot of glue at the corners. It defeats every fixing you have just fitted.
  9. Finish both faces of the top equally.The underside takes as many coats as the top. An unfinished underside absorbs and gives off moisture faster than the sealed top face, and the top cups as a result.

Tips

  • The same rule applies to a solid wood worktop screwed to kitchen carcasses, to a solid shelf screwed to a batten, and to a wide board screwed to a wall. Anything that pins solid timber rigidly across its width will eventually split it or tear out.
  • Breadboard ends are the traditional alternative for keeping a top flat across its width, and they are fixed with the same principle: one peg glued, the rest in elongated holes.
  • If a top has already split at the fixings, releasing the screws often lets it close up again over a season before you attempt a glued repair.

Common mistakes

  • Screwing straight through a rail into the top — It holds the top at a fixed width while the wood tries to change width. The top splits, usually along a glue line, in the first dry winter.
  • Slotting the holes in the wrong direction — A slot running along the grain of the top allows movement in the one direction the wood does not move. It has to run across the top's width.
  • Finishing only the top face — Unequal moisture exchange between the two faces is one of the main causes of a top cupping, and it is entirely avoidable.

If it doesn't work

A split has opened along a glue line in the top

Cause: The top was restrained across its width and shrank — Fix: Release all the fixings first and let the top sit for a season. Then re-glue the split if it has closed, and refit with buttons or slotted holes.

The top has cupped

Cause: Unequal finishing, or one face exposed to more moisture — Fix: Finish the underside to match, and store or place the table where both faces see similar air. Severe cup may need flattening.

The top has crept sideways off the base over years

Cause: All fixings free to slide, none anchoring the centre — Fix: Reposition, then fix one or two central fixings solidly and leave the rest sliding.

Questions people ask

Does this apply to a plywood or MDF top?

No. Sheet materials are dimensionally stable across their width, so they can be screwed down rigidly. It is solid timber and solid timber worktops that need the allowance.

Can I just use pocket screws through the rails?

Only in the centre. A pocket screw is a rigid fixing across the top's width, and a row of them is exactly the problem this guide is about. Use them centrally and use sliding fixings outward of that.
