How do I apply Danish oil or tung oil properly?

Short answer

Flood a thin coat on, let it soak for ten to fifteen minutes, then wipe every trace of excess off with a clean cloth. Leave it to cure for the stated interval, denib lightly, and repeat. Four or five coats builds a genuinely durable finish; the wiping-off step is what makes it work.

Penetrating oils sit in the timber rather than on it, which is why they feel like wood rather than plastic and why they repair invisibly. They also punish the instinct to leave a generous coat on.

Safety

Oil-soaked rags generate heat as the oil cures and can catch fire on their own. This is a real and regular cause of house and workshop fires. Spread used rags out flat to dry outdoors, or soak them in water in a sealed metal container, before disposal. Never leave them screwed up in a bin or a pile.

Step by step

  1. Sand the timber properly first.Work up through the grits to 180 or 220. Oil finishes reveal every scratch, and sanding beyond about 240 can close the grain so the oil cannot penetrate.
  2. Remove all the dust.Vacuum then wipe with a tack cloth or a cloth dampened with white spirit. Dust in the first coat is trapped permanently.
  3. Work at a sensible temperature.Fifteen to twenty degrees with some ventilation. Cold slows the cure dramatically and cold oil is much harder to spread evenly.
  4. Apply the first coat generously.Flood it on with a cloth or brush and let the timber take as much as it wants. End grain will drink far more than the faces.
  5. Let it soak for ten to fifteen minutes.Watch for dry patches where the oil has been absorbed and top those up. The first coat is about penetration, not appearance.
  6. Wipe off every trace of excess.This is the critical step. Clean dry cloths, working until the surface feels dry to the touch. Oil left on the surface cures into a sticky uneven film.
  7. Let it cure for the stated interval.Usually six to twenty-four hours between coats. Rushing this is the main cause of a soft, patchy finish.
  8. Denib between coats.A very light pass with 320 grit or a grey abrasive pad knocks off the raised grain, then wipe the dust away. Do not sand back to bare timber.
  9. Build four or five coats.Each coat penetrates less and builds more sheen. Two coats gives protection; four or five gives a surface that will take real use.
  10. Allow a full cure before use.Touch dry within a day, fully cured in a week or more. Do not put anything wet or heavy on it in that time.
  11. Deal with the rags safely.Spread them flat outdoors to cure, or submerge them in water in a lidded metal tin. This is not a theoretical hazard.
  12. Maintain it periodically.A refresher coat every year or two on a worktop, less often elsewhere. This is the great advantage of an oil finish — you can repair and refresh it without stripping.

Tips

  • Wipe it all off. Almost every bad oil finish comes from leaving too much on the surface.
  • The rags are a genuine fire risk. Spread them out or drown them, every single time.
  • Sanding beyond about 240 grit closes the grain and reduces penetration. It is one of the few places where more sanding is worse.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving the excess oil on to build the finish faster — Oil on the surface has no timber to cure into and remains soft and sticky, often for weeks. It also dries unevenly and looks patchy.
  • Screwing up used rags and binning them — Curing oil generates heat, and a bundled rag holds that heat in. Spontaneous combustion of oily rags causes fires regularly and predictably.

If it doesn't work

Surface sticky several days later

Cause: Excess oil not wiped off, or cold conditions — Fix: Wipe the surface with a cloth dampened in white spirit to remove the uncured film, then let it dry and apply a properly wiped-off coat.

Patchy sheen across the surface

Cause: Uneven absorption or uneven wiping — Fix: Apply another coat, wipe thoroughly and evenly, and build more coats. Sheen evens out as the coats accumulate.

Water marks appearing on a finished worktop

Cause: Not enough coats, or the finish has worn — Fix: Sand the affected area lightly, reoil, and add more coats. This is the finish that repairs most easily.

Finish looks dull and lifeless

Cause: Too few coats, or the timber absorbed everything — Fix: Keep applying coats. Open-grained and thirsty timbers may need six or more before a sheen develops.

Questions people ask

Is Danish oil the same as tung oil?

No. Danish oil is a blend, typically of oil, varnish and solvent, which builds a slight film. Pure tung oil is a single drying oil that penetrates more and cures more slowly. Both are applied the same way.

Is an oil finish food safe?

Fully cured pure oils are generally regarded as safe for food contact, but blended products contain driers and solvents. If it matters, use a product specifically labelled for worktops and chopping boards, and let it cure fully.

Can I oil over an existing varnish?

No. Penetrating oils need bare timber. Strip and sand back to wood first, or the oil sits on the varnish and never cures.
