How do I adjust a published frost date for my own garden?
The five site factors that shift your frost dates away from the nearest weather station's — altitude, hollows, aspect, urban heat and the sea — and how to combine them into a correction you can actually use.

Short answer
Start with the station figure, then adjust: colder and later into spring for every hundred metres you are above the station, colder again if you sit in a hollow or at the bottom of a slope, warmer in a dense urban area, warmer near the coast, and warmer on a slope facing the sun. Corrections are cumulative and can easily total two or three weeks in either direction. Then verify against what your garden actually does.

A weather station measures a field. Your garden is not that field. The corrections below are not precise and are not meant to be — the point is to know which direction your site is offset and roughly how far, so that a published date becomes a starting point rather than a misleading fact.
Step by step
- Note the difference in altitude between you and the station.Air cools as it rises, so higher ground is reliably colder. Every hundred metres of extra height pushes your last frost later and your first frost earlier by a meaningful margin. Ordnance Survey mapping or any mapping app with a terrain layer gives you both heights.
- Decide whether you are in a hollow or on a slope.Cold air drains downhill on still nights and pools at the bottom. A garden in a valley bottom, at the foot of a slope, or behind a solid barrier across a slope can frost several degrees colder than one part-way up the same hill. Mid-slope is the warmest position at night.
- Check your aspect.A slope tilted towards the sun receives more energy per unit of ground and warms earlier in the year. A slope tilted away from it warms later and stays colder. On a small garden this matters less than a hollow does, but it is real.
- Account for urban heat.Masonry, tarmac and heated buildings store daytime heat and release it overnight, exactly when frost forms. A garden surrounded by dense development can run a couple of degrees warmer on a frost night than open country nearby, which shifts both dates in your favour.
- Account for the sea.Water changes temperature far more slowly than land. Coastal gardens have late springs and remarkably long autumns, with frost arriving weeks later than inland at the same latitude. The effect fades within a few miles of the shore.
- Combine them and write down a corrected pair of dates.Add the corrections together — they genuinely stack. A garden that is a hundred metres higher than the station, in a hollow, and rural can easily be three weeks behind it in spring. One that is coastal and urban can be two weeks ahead.
- Test the correction against something you can observe.Compare when a common plant flowers in your garden with when it flowers in a neighbouring area, or when your grass first needs cutting. If your correction says you are two weeks behind and everything you observe is two weeks behind, you have it about right.
Tips
- The single biggest correction on most sites is not altitude — it is whether cold air can drain away. Fixing that is one of the few things on this list you can actually change.
- A large body of still water in the garden, or a swimming pool, gives a small local version of the coastal effect to the ground immediately around it.
- If your neighbours' gardens are consistently ahead of yours, the difference is your site, not your gardening. That is useful information, not a criticism.
- Write the correction down alongside the station figure and the reason for it. In three years you will not remember why you decided you were ten days behind.
Common mistakes
- Applying one correction and stopping — The factors stack. Altitude alone might say you are a week behind; altitude plus a hollow plus a rural setting might make it three weeks, which is a completely different planting plan.
- Assuming a warm wall or a sheltered corner corrects the whole garden — It corrects that corner. The rest of the plot is still on the site figure. This is why the microclimate map is a separate exercise — most gardens need more than one date.

Is there a formula for this?
Not one that would be honest. The physics of each factor is well understood, but the interaction on a particular half-acre is not something a formula captures. Direction and rough magnitude is what you want, verified against observation.
What if my garden sits on the edge of two of these — half in a hollow, half on a slope?
Then it genuinely has two sets of dates and you should treat it that way. Map it, and plant the frost-sensitive things in the better half.
