Why is my ABS or traction control light on, and is the car safe?
What the ABS, traction control and stability control lights actually mean, why one failed sensor takes all three out at once, and the combination that means stop driving.

Short answer
An amber ABS light on its own means the anti-lock system has switched itself off. Ordinary braking still works normally, so the car is drivable with extra care, but book it in — it is also an MOT failure. If the ABS light and the red brake warning light are on together, stop and get the car recovered. The usual cause of all of these is one dirty or failed wheel speed sensor, which is a comparatively cheap fix.
ABS, traction control and stability control are three programs sharing one set of hardware. All of them work from the same four wheel speed sensors, the same hydraulic unit and the same control module, and all they really do is compare how fast each wheel is turning against the others and against how fast the car is actually travelling. ABS uses that to stop a wheel locking under braking. Traction control uses it to stop a wheel spinning under power. Stability control uses it, plus a yaw sensor, to spot the car rotating more or less than the steering says it should. Because they share the plumbing, a single sensor fault very often lights all three warnings at once, which looks alarming and usually is not.

- Check whether the red brake warning light is on as well.This is the one distinction that matters. Amber ABS on its own is a lost driver aid. Amber ABS plus the red brake light can mean electronic brake force distribution has also been disabled, which changes how the car behaves in a hard stop. Treat that pairing as stop-and-call-recovery.
- Note whether it came on while moving or at start-up.The system self-tests when you start the car and the lights should go out within a few seconds. A light that appears mid-journey, especially on a bumpy road or through a flood, points at a sensor or its wiring. A light present from key-on every time points at a stored fault.
- Try one full restart.Some faults are transient — a wheel spinning on ice, a sensor reading briefly lost. If the light clears on a restart and never returns, it was probably a one-off, but the code is still stored and worth reading.
- Check the obvious mechanical causes first.A different-sized wheel or a heavily worn tyre on one corner changes that wheel's rotational speed and can trigger it. So can a space-saver spare left on for weeks. If you have recently changed a tyre or fitted a spare, start there.
- Have the fault codes read.This system stores which corner it is unhappy about. A code reader will usually name the wheel — front left, rear right — which turns a diagnostic job into a targeted one. That alone can halve the labour bill.
- Expect the answer to be a wheel speed sensor.By a wide margin the most common cause is a wheel speed sensor or its reluctor ring, contaminated with brake dust and road salt, corroded, or with a chafed cable. It is one of the cheaper things on a car to put right, which is worth knowing before anyone quotes you for a hydraulic unit.
- Adjust how you drive until it is fixed.Assume the car will lock its wheels if you stand on the brakes. Bigger gaps, earlier and gentler braking, and much more caution in the wet or on gravel. Threshold braking — firm, but backing off the instant you feel a wheel lock — is what the system was doing for you.
- Get it fixed before the MOT.The MOT checks that the ABS warning lamp illuminates and then goes out. A lamp that stays on is a failure, so this is not something to leave until the test.
Common mistakes
- Treating an amber ABS light as no different from a service reminder — You have lost a system that only reveals itself in an emergency stop. Nothing feels different until the one moment it would have mattered, which is exactly why people leave it for months.
- Assuming three lights means three faults and three bills — They share sensors, hydraulics and a module. One failure very commonly lights the lot, and the fix is usually singular and modest.
If it doesn't work
Light comes on only in wet weather or after a car wash
Cause: Water in a sensor connector or a chafed cable — Fix: Common and usually cheap. Ask the garage to check the connectors and the loom routing at the corner the code names before replacing anything.
Traction control light flashes while driving in rain or snow
Cause: The system working, not failing — Fix: A flashing traction light means it is actively intervening. That is what it is for. A steady light is the fault; a flashing one is a warning that grip is limited.
All three lights plus the speedometer stopped working
Cause: Many cars take the speedometer signal from the same wheel sensors or the ABS module — Fix: This points firmly at the module or a shared circuit rather than at three separate faults. Get the codes read before anyone starts replacing parts.
Light appeared right after new tyres or brakes
Cause: A sensor disturbed, a cable trapped, or a reluctor ring damaged during the work — Fix: Ring the garage that did the work first. It is very often something they can put right in minutes, and it should not cost you.
Stability control light on and the car feels normal
Cause: Steering angle sensor not calibrated, often after alignment or a battery disconnection — Fix: Many cars need the steering angle sensor re-zeroed with a diagnostic tool after this kind of work. It is a software job, not a parts job.
Questions people ask
Can I still drive with just the ABS light on?
Legally yes, and the car will stop, but without anti-lock assistance. In practice that means much more space, earlier braking and real caution in the wet. It is a book-it-in-this-week fault, not a drive-it-all-winter one — and it will fail the MOT.
Why did the light come on after I drove through a flood?
Water gets into wheel speed sensor connectors and into the wiring that runs down to each hub. Sometimes it dries out and clears; sometimes the connector has corroded and needs cleaning or replacing. Either way have the codes read rather than waiting to see.
Is traction control the same as stability control?
No, though they share hardware. Traction control limits wheelspin under power. Stability control, sometimes badged ESP, ESC or DSC, brakes individual wheels to correct the car sliding. Stability control has been mandatory on new cars sold in the UK for many years and is the one that saves people.
